Gabon played 1-1 draw in African Nations Cup Opener

Juary Soares snatched a sensational late equalizer for debutants Guinea-Bissau as they recouped from a Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang strike to hold host Gabon to a 1-1 draw in the Africa Cup of Nations opening match.

Gabon seemed, by all means, to be going out toward victory in Saturday’s Group A match after Borussia Dortmund striker Aubameyang handed the ball over from short range seven minutes into the second half at the Stade de l’Amitie in the capital Libreville.

Nevertheless, Soares headed home in the 90th moment to gain Guinea-Bissau an important point in their first since a continental final.

There were boos at the last whistle from the home fans at the 40,000-seat stadium, where the capacity was filled included Gabonese president Ali Bongo and Issa Hayatou, the veteran leader of the Confederation of African Football.
